B.Tech. Grad reinvents the skate blade and takes home the top prize at Lion’s Lair

Nick Montecchia is a 2007 Bachelor of Technology graduate from the Manufacturing Engineering Technology stream. The combination of technical and management courses that he was exposed to throughout the program, lead to the invention of RZR Skate Blades.

ToughEdge is a process that RZR has developed for use on skate blades that provides an edge that is five times harder, and a core that can withstand three times greater impact compared to a standard blade. G3 technology uses a custom precision manufacturing process to create perfect blade geometry (i.e., pitch, radius and profile). Furthermore, there are endless custom options available to suit any individual players' needs, including colours, names and logos on the blades themselves.

This innovative idea caught the attention of the judges at the Lion’s Lair competition in Hamilton. This product, “mixes two ingredients that Hamilton is well known for: steel and hockey”. Nick and his fellow company co-founders walked away with the top prize that included legal and accounting services, team dynamics training, video production and $15,000 in cash.
